Correspondence, reports, minutes of various organizations, and other papers of Geography professor Harold Mayer, relating primarily to his studies of urban planning and transportation systems and his consulting work and civic activities in the Chicago area. Included are Chicago Plan Commission proceedings from January 1950; correspondence regarding the Port of Chicago and the Caumet Sag Channel (1953-1955); board minutes from the Chicago Regional Port District (1951-1953); correspondence with the Near West Side Planning Board, Inc. (1950); materials on the Chicago Area Transportation Study; a copy of Mayer's "Freight Study," produced on behalf of the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission in the early 1970s; and a typescript copy of the Mayer's and Richard Wade's book, Chicago: Growth of a Metropolis, sent to Mayer in 1983 by the University of Chicago Press as a working copy towards a revised edition.

In 1957 (through the efforts of the Randolph Commission, the Metropolitan Housing and Planning Council and other civic and business groups), the Illinois legislature established the Northeastern Illinois Metropolitan Area Planning Commission--known later by its shortened name as the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, or NIPC.
